Achieve a more even complexion with these powerhouse serums, lotions, and spot treatments.
Whether you’re combating acne scars, melasma, or age spots, finding the best dark spot corrector is key for evening out your complexion. These types of powerhouse skincare products target stubborn hyperpigmentation (a common condition that causes some areas of the skin to be darker than others) and help you get your glow back.
“Hyperpigmentation is very complicated,” explains Karan Lal, D.O., M.S., F.A.A.D., skin of color expert and double board-certified adult, pediatric, and cosmetic dermatologist with Affiliated Dermatology in Scottsdale, AZ. “It’s mostly something that occurs after an inflammatory condition in the skin, such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, or skin trauma. It can also be a result of hormones (for example, melasma) or it can be due to sun exposure.”
No matter where your dark spots came from, there are targeted treatments that can help. “Dark spot correctors are products that address hyperpigmentation or dark discoloration of the skin,” explains Anar Mikailov, M.D., F.A.A.D., board-certified dermatologist and co-founder of Skintensive.
“Dark spot correctors can work by either inhibiting melanin production or by improving cell turnover,” Dr. Mikailov explains, with ingredients like vitamin C, retinol, glycolic acid, tranexamic acid, and beyond.

This elegant formula by Perricone MD is “a really great glutathione-containing product,” recommended by Dr. Lal. Glutathione is considered a skin brightener, and is effective for promoting overall skin radiance as well as for treating isolated dark spots. This formula is also great for those with sensitive skin, Dr. Lal notes. It’s also a great pick for those looking to target fine lines and wrinkles.
How to choose the best dark spot corrector
Dr. Lal says to keep the following in mind:
✔️ Decide if you want to brighten skin. If so, try a brightener. These products are for “people that want to brighten all of their skin or have all-over hyperpigmentation,” Dr. Lal explains. Look for products containing ingredients like vitamin C and glutathione which help brighten skin over all and target isolated dark spots.
✔️Think of exfoliating. Exfoliants “exfoliate the skin and give your skin an overall light peel to help decrease that hyperpigmentation,” Dr. Lal explains. Look for products containing alpha hydroxy acids like lactic acid, mandelic acid, and glycolic acid.
✔️Consider a targeted approach. Lightening agent ingredients are used “specifically for darkness” and are “great for local areas,” says Dr. Lal, who recommends reaching for products containing tranexamic acid, kojic acid, and licorice root extract. Additionally, hydroquinone is a powerful lightening agent, but you’ll need a prescription for hydroquinone-containing products.
✔️Fight inflammation with anti-inflammatories. “If you have dark spots that are from inflammation [like from an injury], something that you should consider using is 1% hydrocortisone, which is a great anti-inflammatory agent and it also does lighten the skin,” Dr. Lal explains. Sea buckthorn berry extract and willow bark extract are also notable anti-inflammatory ingredients that “help soothe the skin,” Dr. Mikailov says.
Do dark spot correctors work?
While a dark spot corrector can take many forms (likes spot treatments, creams, or serums), they are generally extremely effective at diminishing hyperpigmentation, evening skin tone, and bringing radiance back to skin.
There are lots of ingredients that are helpful at targeting dark spots, but those with dark skin tones may need to be more careful while using some of these products. “Some ingredients [like exfoliating acids and retinols] can be very irritating to the skin, which can actually cause inflammation in the skin that can lead to hyperpigmentation,” Dr. Lal explains. “And this is very common in [darker skin tones.].” Dr. Lal recommends starting off slow, only using them about twice a week until skin adapts.
